Full Transcript (English)

Host (Mutsumi): Good morning.

Host (Fuki): Good morning.

Host (Mutsumi): I’m Kurobe.

Host (Fuki): I’m Kamai.

Host (Mutsumi): Today, I want to talk about how I might be in the “frenemy” reserve group.

Host (Fuki): That’s scary! You mean the “friend-enemy” frenemy we talked about a few episodes ago?

Host (Mutsumi): Yes. I’ve realized there are moments where I might be acting like a frenemy. Of course, it’s not that I want my friends to suffer. But sometimes, when I see a friend working incredibly hard, I start to feel miserable about myself. I find myself thinking, “Stop working so hard!”

Host (Fuki): Oh, I see.

Host (Mutsumi): For example, if I’m planning to go to sleep but my friend is staying up all night to finish work, I’ll say, “Just go to sleep!” Even though for them, finishing that work is important and brings them joy, I feel like a failure if they keep going while I quit. So I use strong words to try and stop them.

Host (Fuki): Right, right.

Host (Mutsumi): It happens with food too. If we’re out and I’m struggling with my own eating habits, and a friend says they haven’t eaten breakfast, I’ll snap, “Go eat something!” Or if they’re on a diet and hesitating over dessert, I’ll push them: “Just eat it! Eat the fries! Eat the bread!” It’s not because I want them to enjoy the food; it’s because I can’t handle the fact that they have the discipline I lack. I want to drag them down to my level so I don’t feel so bad.

Host (Fuki): (Laughs) Is that really being a frenemy?

Host (Mutsumi): That’s what I’m wondering! Am I a frenemy?

Host (Fuki): It’s a very fine line. Telling someone to sleep when they’re working late can be seen as genuine concern for their health. Encouraging someone to eat something delicious can be seen as being a supportive friend who wants them to enjoy life. If you don’t say the dark thoughts out loud, you just seem like a very kind, caring person.

Host (Mutsumi): But inside, it’s not kindness. My “inner angel” is saying, “Don’t say that,” while my “inner demon” is shouting, “Don’t let them get ahead of me!”

Host (Fuki): I think the difference is in the action. If you’re truly a frenemy, you’d have 100% malicious intent and actively try to sabotage them. But your comments could also be interpreted as being supportive. It’s very human to feel that way.

Host (Mutsumi): I really do love my friends. It’s not that I hate them. It’s just that my own self-comparison makes me want to stop them from being “better” than me in that moment.

Host (Fuki): Maybe the key is to stop comparing yourself. If we can accept that everyone has their own pace and their own way of doing things, those “dark” feelings might fade. It’s about “freedom of the heart”—you can think what you want, but it’s how you act that matters. As long as you aren’t forcing them or getting genuinely angry when they succeed, you’re probably okay.

Host (Mutsumi): That makes sense. I need to focus on being “me” and let them be “them.”

Host (Fuki): Exactly. The fact that you’re even worried about being a frenemy shows that you care about being a good friend.

Host (Mutsumi): Thank you. I feel a bit better now. Let’s all try to be aware of these feelings and not let them turn into real “frenemy” behavior.
