Host (Jun Hori): Hello everyone, I am Jun Hori. Today, we are joined by photojournalist Natsuki Yasuda, who has spent years documenting the Middle East and has recently returned from reporting on the region. Natsuki, thank you for joining us today at 8bitNews.

Guest (Natsuki Yasuda): Thank you for having me. It is a critical time to be talking about this.

Host: You have been visiting the region for a long time. Looking at the current situation in Gaza and the surrounding areas, what is the most striking difference you feel compared to previous years?

Guest: The sense of isolation is unprecedented. In the past, even during heavy escalations, there was a belief among the people that the world was watching and that international law might eventually offer some protection. Now, that hope has largely vanished. People feel that the “weight of life” is being measured differently depending on where you are born. They see the world reacting quickly to some conflicts while remaining silent or paralyzed during others.

Host: I felt that too when I was at the border. The sheer volume of aid trucks just sitting there, unable to move while people are starving just a few kilometers away. It feels like an artificial disaster. But in Japan, the news cycle is moving on. How do we keep people engaged?

Guest: It is difficult. When the numbers of casualties become too high, the human brain tends to shut down as a defense mechanism. We start seeing “30,000 dead” as just a statistic. Our job as journalists is to break that down. We need to talk about the one child who loved drawing, or the father who was a baker. We have to bring the focus back to the individual lives that are being extinguished.

Host: Exactly. That is why independent media like 8bitNews exists—to provide the context that 30-second TV news clips miss. We often hear about “both sides,” but we must also look at the power imbalance and the reality of the occupation. What do you think the Japanese public can do from here?

Guest: First, do not look away. Even if you feel powerless, staying informed is a form of resistance against apathy. Secondly, we must question our own government’s stance. Japan has a unique position in the Middle East; we should be pushing harder for a ceasefire and humanitarian access based on our own history of peace-building.

Host: Thank you, Natsuki. We will continue to follow your work and provide updates here. The world must not look away.
