Host (Jun Hori): Hello, this is Jun Hori from 8bitNews. I am reporting today from the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. It has been several months since the massive earthquake struck on New Year’s Day, but as you can see from the landscape behind me, the scars of the disaster remain deep and untouched in many areas.

Host: While some urban areas are beginning to see a return to normalcy, the situation in the mountainous and coastal villages is vastly different. Here, the debris has not been cleared, and many residents are still living in damaged homes without basic utilities. The disparity in the speed of recovery is becoming a major social issue.

Host: I spoke with a local resident who has been living in a temporary shelter. She expressed a sentiment we are hearing more and more: the fear of being forgotten.

Guest (Local Resident): In the beginning, there were so many people here—volunteers, reporters, and government officials. Now, it is very quiet. We still don’t have running water in our district. We have to carry heavy tanks every day. We feel like the rest of the country has moved on, but for us, time has stopped since January 1st.

Host: Another critical issue is the “silent struggle.” In these tight-knit communities, there is a strong cultural tendency to avoid “bothering” others. We are finding elderly people who are suffering in silence, refusing to ask for aid because they believe others are worse off. This self-restraint is dangerous and can lead to disaster-related deaths.

Guest (Support Worker): We have to go door-to-door to find these people. They won’t come to the distribution centers because they don’t want to be a burden. The psychological toll is mounting. They need to know that it is okay to ask for help and that they haven’t been abandoned.

Host: The government’s response must be tailored to these specific regional needs. Simply announcing recovery budgets is not enough if the resources aren’t reaching these isolated pockets. 8bitNews will continue to stay on the ground here in Noto to ensure these voices reach the public. We cannot allow this disparity to widen any further.
