Noto Earthquake: Isolated Villages Left Without Aid as Infrastructure Collapses

Full Transcript (English)

Host (Jun Hori): I am reporting from a mountainous district in the Noto Peninsula. The earthquake has completely transformed this landscape. The road we are standing on is fractured, with gaps so wide you can see deep into the earth. This is why aid hasn’t reached here; the infrastructure is simply gone. We had to hike several kilometers to reach this community.

Resident: We’ve been waiting and waiting. Every time we hear a helicopter, we hope it’s coming for us, but they just fly past toward the bigger cities like Wajima or Suzu. We are a small village, mostly elderly people. Do they even know we are here? We feel completely abandoned by the administration.

Host: How have you been managing for food and water since the quake struck?

Resident: We had some rice stored, and we are cooking it over open fires outside. For water, we are collecting snow and melting it. But it’s not clean, and people are starting to get sick. We need professional medical help and clean drinking water immediately. The cold at night is unbearable without heating.

Host: The resilience of these people is incredible, but they shouldn’t have to rely solely on themselves. The “last mile” of disaster relief is failing here. While the central government announces that supplies are moving, the reality in these mountainous pockets is that the hand of the state hasn’t reached them yet. We need specialized teams that can navigate these broken roads or use airlifts to bring supplies directly to these survivors. The government needs to look beyond the main evacuation centers. This is Jun Hori, reporting for 8bitNews.
