Full Transcript (English)

Host (Jun Hori): I am reporting from Suzu City in Ishikawa Prefecture. It has been over a month since the massive earthquake on New Year’s Day, yet the most basic necessity of life—running water—is still missing for many here. As you can see behind me, the taps remain dry, and the recovery of infrastructure is moving at a painfully slow pace.

Guest (Local Resident): Every single morning, I have to come here and wait in line for the Self-Defense Forces’ water truck. I am 80 years old. Carrying these heavy plastic tanks back to my house is becoming physically impossible. My back and legs are giving out.

Host: We see the military and volunteers working tirelessly, but what is the actual timeline you are being told for the restoration of the pipes?

Guest: They tell us the damage is far worse than initially thought. The pipes are completely shattered underground. Some say it might take several more months. We haven’t been able to take a proper bath in weeks. We use wet wipes, but it’s not the same.

Host: The psychological impact of this situation cannot be overstated. When you cannot maintain basic hygiene, it wears down your spirit. How are the people around you coping?

Guest: People are reaching their limit. You lose your sense of dignity when you can’t even flush a toilet properly. We feel like the rest of the country is starting to forget about us because the initial shock of the disaster has passed, but for us, the disaster is happening every day.

Host: This is the reality on the ground. While the national news cycle moves on to other topics, the people of the Noto Peninsula are still in the midst of a humanitarian crisis. 8bitNews will continue to stay here and amplify these voices to ensure that the recovery efforts do not stall. Reporting from Suzu City, I’m Jun Hori.
