Host (Jun Hori): Hello, this is Jun Hori for 8bitNews. I have returned to the Noto Peninsula. It has been exactly one month since the massive earthquake struck on New Year’s Day, but the situation on the ground remains critical. I am currently standing in a residential district of Wajima City. As you can see behind me, many houses are still exactly as they were—collapsed and untouched. The sound of heavy machinery is rare in these smaller neighborhoods.

Host: The road we took to get here was barely passable. Fissures and landslides have severed the main arteries connecting these coastal villages to the rest of Ishikawa Prefecture. While the government reports that main roads are reopening, the “last mile” to these individual homes is still blocked.

Guest (Local Resident): We have been without running water for over a month now. Every day, we have to carry heavy tanks from the water trucks. It is exhausting, especially for the elderly who make up most of this community. We feel like the rest of Japan has already moved on to the next news story, but for us, the disaster is still happening every single day.

Host: This is the “information gap” we often talk about. Official statistics focus on percentages of infrastructure restored, but they don’t show the reality of a family using snow to flush their toilets. We are also seeing a rise in “disaster-related deaths.” These are people who survived the initial tremors but are dying now because of the extreme cold, the lack of proper medical care, and the sheer stress of living in evacuation centers.

Guest (Volunteer Coordinator): What we need now is not just generic aid packages. We need targeted support—people who can help clear the debris from private paths and medical professionals who can provide mental health support. The uncertainty of when—or if—they can rebuild their homes is breaking people’s spirits.

Host: 8bitNews will continue to stay on the ground and document these stories. It is vital that we do not let the public’s attention fade. Independent journalism exists to highlight the voices that the mainstream media might miss as the news cycle moves on. We must maintain a long-term commitment to the reconstruction of Noto. Thank you for watching and for supporting our independent reporting.
