Host (Jun Hori): Hello everyone. This is 8bitNews. Today, we are focusing on the current situation in the Gaza Strip. It has been a significant amount of time since the escalation of the conflict, and the reports coming out are increasingly dire. Joining us today to provide insight into the reality on the ground and the efforts being made is Toshiharu Kato from the Japan Volunteer Center (JVC). Thank you for being here.
Guest (Toshiharu Kato): Thank you for having me. It is vital that we continue to talk about what is happening in Gaza, as the situation is not improving; in many ways, it is worsening every day.
Host: We see the news daily, but it is often hard to grasp the scale of the suffering. What are your local staff and partners telling you about the current living conditions?
Guest: Our local partners are living in the same conditions as the people they are trying to help. They are displaced, often living in tents or overcrowded shelters. The most basic necessities—clean water, food, and fuel—are incredibly scarce. Prices have skyrocketed, making it impossible for ordinary families to afford what little is available. People are literally starving, and the healthcare system has almost entirely collapsed.
Host: We often hear about “safe zones” designated for civilians. Are these areas actually providing safety?
Guest: In reality, there is no safe place in Gaza. Areas that were previously designated as safe zones have been subjected to bombardment. People are told to move from one place to another, but they are often attacked during the journey or at their destination. This constant displacement creates a sense of total hopelessness. You have over two million people trapped in a very small area with nowhere to run.
Host: One of the most heartbreaking aspects is the impact on children. What are you seeing regarding their well-being?
Guest: The impact is profound. In typical conflict zones, we talk about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). But in Gaza, there is no “post.” It is continuous trauma. Children are living in a constant state of fear, hearing explosions day and night. They are losing their parents, their homes, and their schools. An entire generation is being deeply scarred, and the psychological recovery will take decades, if it can even begin.
Host: What is JVC doing currently to provide aid, and what are the biggest obstacles you face?
Guest: We are working with local partners to distribute food baskets, hygiene kits, and provide some psychological support where possible. However, the biggest obstacle is the blockade and the restricted flow of aid. Even when supplies reach the border, getting them inside and distributed safely is a monumental challenge due to the ongoing military operations and the lack of security for humanitarian workers.
Host: Finally, what can the international community, and specifically people in Japan, do to help change this situation?
Guest: First, we must not look away. We need to keep the pressure on our governments to demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire. Humanitarian aid is a band-aid if the bombing doesn’t stop. We also need financial support to keep our operations running. But most importantly, we need to recognize the humanity of the people in Gaza. They are not just numbers; they are individuals with dreams and families who deserve to live in peace and dignity.
