Noto Peninsula Earthquake: Suzu City Residents Face “Limits” of Evacuation Life Amid Ongoing Water Outages

Full Transcript (English)

Host (Jun Hori): I am currently in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, at one of the primary evacuation centers. It has been over a month since the Noto Peninsula earthquake, but the situation here remains dire. As you can see, the gymnasium is still filled with cardboard partitions. While they provide a modicum of privacy, the cold and the lack of basic infrastructure are taking a heavy toll on the residents.

Guest (Local Resident): To be honest, we are at our limit. The hardest part is the water. Without running water, we can’t flush toilets properly, and we can’t wash our clothes. We have to rely on water trucks, but carrying heavy containers every day is exhausting for people my age. We feel like we’ve been forgotten by the central government.

Host: The government is promoting ‘secondary evacuations,’ asking people to move to hotels or ryokans in Kanazawa or even further away. However, many people here are hesitant. Why is that?

Guest (Local Resident): This is our home. Our friends, our history, and our livelihoods are here. If we leave now, we are afraid Suzu will simply disappear. If the elderly leave, who will come back to rebuild? We need the government to focus on restoring the water and clearing the roads here, rather than just telling us to move away.

Host: Walking through the city, the damage is still overwhelming. Debris covers the streets, and many houses are exactly as they were the day after the quake. The local fishing industry and small businesses are at a standstill. There is a palpable sense of anxiety that the ‘restoration’ is happening much slower than in previous disasters.

Guest (Volunteer): We are seeing a lot of people who are ‘hidden’ victims—those staying in their damaged cars or in homes that are technically unsafe because they don’t want to be in the crowded shelters. They aren’t getting the same level of food or medical checks. We need a more flexible system of support that reaches every individual, not just those in the official centers.

Host: At 8bitNews, we believe it is vital to keep the cameras pointed here. As the national news cycle moves on to other topics, the people of Noto are just beginning their long road to recovery. We will continue to share these voices directly from the ground to ensure that ‘recovery’ means more than just statistics, but the restoration of dignity for these residents.
