Host (Jun Hori): I am standing here in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It has been exactly six months since the massive earthquake struck on New Year’s Day. While the news cycle in Tokyo often moves on to other topics, the reality here is that time has seemingly stood still for many. As you can see behind me, the scars of the disaster are still raw. Collapsed houses and debris still line the streets of residential neighborhoods.

Host: One of the most pressing issues facing survivors right now is the delay in “publicly funded demolition.” This is a system where the local government covers the cost of removing destroyed homes. However, the application process is backlogged, and the actual work is moving at a snail’s pace. I spoke with a local resident who has been waiting for months.

Guest (Local Resident): We submitted our paperwork back in February, but we still haven’t heard when the contractors will arrive. Every morning I wake up in a temporary shelter and come here to look at my ruined house. It’s hard to move forward mentally when the physical destruction is constantly in your sight. We can’t even think about rebuilding until this land is cleared.

Host: The local authorities explain that the scale of destruction is unprecedented for this region. There is a severe shortage of demolition crews, and many of the roads are still too damaged or narrow for heavy machinery to pass through safely. But for the people living here, these explanations don’t change the fact that they are living in a state of limbo.

Host: At 8bitNews, we believe it is vital to keep the spotlight on these “forgotten” areas. Recovery isn’t just about statistics; it’s about the lives of individuals who are struggling to find a path back to normalcy. We will continue to follow the situation in Noto and amplify the voices of those on the ground.
