Host (Jun Hori): It has now been five months since the Noto Peninsula earthquake struck on New Year’s Day. I have returned to Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture to see the current state of the recovery efforts.

Host: As I walk through the city, the reality is stark. While the main arterial roads have been cleared to allow traffic, once you step into the residential neighborhoods, the scenery is almost identical to what I saw shortly after the disaster. Many houses remain completely collapsed, blocking side paths and weighing heavily on the hearts of the local people.

Host: The primary issue currently facing the survivors is the delay in “Public Demolition.” This is a system where the local government handles the demolition and removal of disaster-damaged houses using national funds. For many, this is the first essential step toward reconstruction. However, the application process is moving slowly, and there is a critical shortage of contractors and workers available to perform the tasks.

Host: I spoke with a resident earlier today who submitted their paperwork back in February. They were told that it might be autumn, or even early next year, before the demolition crews actually arrive at their property. Without the land being cleared, they cannot even begin to discuss blueprints for a new home or apply for certain types of rebuilding assistance. They feel as though their lives are on a permanent pause.

Host: Furthermore, the geographical nature of the Noto Peninsula makes logistics difficult. The limited number of roads means that transporting heavy machinery in and hauling debris out takes a significant amount of time. There is also the problem of where to put the waste; temporary storage sites are reaching their capacity.

Host: While the national news cycle may have moved on to other topics, the disaster in Noto is far from over. The disparity between the government’s official progress reports and the actual sight of these untouched ruins is concerning. We must continue to keep our eyes on Noto and ensure that the support promised to these communities is actually delivered. This is Jun Hori reporting for 8bitNews.
