Six Months After the Noto Earthquake: The Reality of a Stalled Recovery and the Role of Independent Media

Full Transcript (English)

Host (Jun Hori): It has now been six months since the Noto Peninsula earthquake struck on New Year’s Day. I am currently back in Ishikawa Prefecture to see how things have changed—or rather, how they have not. Looking around Wajima City, the scars of the disaster are still incredibly deep. You can see that many of the collapsed buildings remain exactly as they were months ago. The pace of demolition and debris removal is much slower than what we saw in previous disasters, such as the Kumamoto earthquake.

Host: One of the biggest issues right now is the “information gap.” While people in metropolitan areas might feel that the situation is settling down, for the residents here, the struggle is a daily reality. I spoke with a resident who is still living in a damaged house because the temporary housing units are either full or located too far from their place of work. They told me, “We feel like the rest of Japan has already forgotten us.”

Host: Water services have been restored in many urban centers, but the quality and consistency remain major issues in the more remote, mountainous villages. The roads are still treacherous, making it difficult for elderly residents to access basic medical services. This is exactly why we at 8bitNews continue to come here. Mainstream media tends to follow a specific “anniversary” cycle—reporting heavily at the three-month, six-month, and one-year marks—but the needs of the people do not follow a calendar.

Host: We need to keep sharing these voices to ensure that the recovery budget and political will do not fade away. We must hold the authorities accountable for the speed of the reconstruction. Thank you for supporting independent journalism that stays on the ground and listens to those who are being left behind.
