2017: Alright Gandhi and Mouca Records’ Trips 2017

When I asked Rosa Mercedes, a vocalist of Alright Gandhi, 3-piece-band based in Berlin, how she feels about the world today, she said, “I think I’m careful not to talk about it in the way people talk about it in general. It is kind of perpetuating things.”

Rosa said, “there are different languages to communicate with people. there’s a language of politics, news and that way of talking, that way of describing the world. There are the languages of music and art. This is the language I choose. I wanna talk about the world in poetry. I want to empower people and encourage them to live, to live differently to the default, the default or just following the big bad current. I don’t think it helps necessarily to use the political language. I just don’t really believe in it. I studied politics and law. And I finished my studies. There’s no way out of this. This is self-perpetuating. This way of talking has somehow created a way to keep itself alive. Real problems exist. In a way to solve them you can encourage people to support each other, or to make different choices through music and poetry which is far more powerful. I think if you don’t say “do this or do that, this is good or this is bad”, if you can get people to actually question everything, then things can get better. People don’t question the basic ways that things are going. And the way we all let these things happen. Yeah so, I guess I have my relationship with politics, and it is kind of complicated, but the whole thing about what people do to communicate, is not the best way to communicate. It’s like dividing. It is by default a game of power, where someone is always against someone. I noticed myself that the more I learned about it, the less empowered I felt. Nobody would do anything if they wouldn’t feel empowered. A song can make you feel the importance of things and that is somehow powerful. That’s a far stronger weapon against real evil and at the same time it doesn’t encourage people to be someone they are not. No one needs to think inside the boxed universe.”

I told her that “What does freedom mean to you if you always choose the good…” was one of my favorite lines from their 1st album “Little Traveller.” Then she said, “sometimes you have to make bad choices,” and laughed.

When we were doing an interview, it was raining in Tokyo. It was some time after Alright Gandhi finished playing in a city called Santander in Spain. They were finishing up their 3-week-long Spain/ Portugal tour. Now they are somewhere in the United States, and they will be touring in Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Japan this fall. Rosa said it is “surreal. It’s something that Augusto (Mouca Records) tells us it can happen and it will happen and it’s gonna be amazing. To me it’s like kind of similar to telling me that we gonna go out to space or something. It’s super different from my reality. So it’s awesome. I love that kind of thing. I don’t know, I’m just very curious. No idea.”

Alright Gandhi is making their 2nd album right now. Rosa described that it is snapshots by a touring band.

Alright Gandhi’s first album “Little Traveller” was born swiftly out of a studio in Berlin, the city Rosa “lives” but she is never really there these days. This 3-week-long tour they just finished was the most daily life she had in a while. There is no routine in Berlin and from time to time she goes to a forest outside of Berlin. When they were recording “Little Traveller,” Rosa, Dominick Gray and Pietro Fornara hanged out in the studio for what it felt like ages. The process starts when Rosa writes a poem, after she spontaneously sings the melodies, then the rest of the sounds start following. Sometimes they recorded songs on the very same day she throws out words and melodies. It was very quick. It was a recording of natural and spontaneous writing process. A lot of songs are about moments or something that has crystallized and became real. The second album they are recording is very different. It comes from playing a lot. They play, loop and form the songs.

Even if it might feel separated, the time and the space exist in the continuity, and the world is connected. I met Augusto Lima, a music promoter, and Rosa, a musician, through my friend Travis Trevisan, a musician I met in San Diego, the city I encountered the living language of art and music. I remember well the night I saw Travis´ band Tape Deck Mountain at Bar Pink during North Park Music Thing. I was blissfully drunk. Local bands were playing all over the town. The streets were full of people. Bars were packed. “People are the same,” said my friend Jordan Hammond, who was also drunk. He played music in a band called Primitive Noyes. He was a kind of friend who randomly said things with a hippie philosophical twists. We talked about politics a lot, and of course talked about art and music a lot. He was an American. I was a Japanese. And it didn’t matter for us to be drinking, seeing local bands and smoking lots of cigarets together. And that was like 7 years ago. The president was Barak Obama, and marijuana wasn’t legal in any state yet. I left SD about 4 years ago and started living in Tokyo, a much bigger city.

Augusto Lima has been working as a promoter for musicians for many years. He has a small “label” called Mouca Records, based in Europe (Portugal, Germany and Lithuania). The label started with a release party in Brooklyn, NYC, and has been working with artists like Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth, Cat Power, Bill Callahan, Mt Eerie, Le Ton Mité, Asuna, Dean Wareham and many others.

After Travis introduced him to me, he wrote, “I’m trying to book a tour for Alright Ghandhi. It’d be great if you’d like to be involved somehow.”

“I’d love to help,” I replied.

To him, music is really about touring. When he first met Xiu Xiu, they were doing more than 300 shows a year. Now they are collaborating with David Lynch. Knowing that musicians can survive like that was very impressive. Business sides, such as distribution, is the least favorite part of the music “industry” to him. Bands don’t sell as many records/CDs compared to the past now. And it’s not a bad thing to him. The less intervention from the “industry” between the artists and listeners the better. Mouca Records isn’t actually a “label.” It’s more like an “idea.” There are no contracts and there is no exclusivity. His “idea” is quite simply. It come from the fact he doesn’t like own bands, their music and art. Sometimes things can go wrong when labels actually have power over the bands’ creative process.

“It’s all about trust. If you need a paper and a stamp, signatures to achieve trust, then maybe it’s not worth it. And it feels so good to have this freedom…where artists can find their many ways without counting on a single deal…of course this is not for everybody,” he said.

For a while, Augusto seemed to be always traveling. One of the times he was in Thailand, another time he was in Okinawa, then Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore. Recently he just finished a road trip from Cairns to Sydney in Australia with his Lithuanian girlfriend Dalia. As he travelled and met new people and new music, he made mixtapes putting them available on Mouca´s website. For the methods of traveling, sometimes they did workaway and other times they offered their video production skills to, for example, borrow a campervan for free. Along the way they wrote and made a video about a sustainable energy project. Sometimes Dalia wrote about the beauty of the trip. She wrote about the places, people, and also let the photos speak.

Now having travelled Asia, Augusto found himself wanting to do and make things happen more internationally with the people outside of Western culture who have a very different mindset about touring. “It’s exciting to be in such different places and people are amazing,” he said. He has been always into music, and music always comes down to the people, the music makers. It’s a beautiful continuous and contagious loop trip.

1997 was like a beginning. He was still a boy and was writing an email to one of his favorite band Labradford because there were no bands coming to his hometown Porto, Portugal. Then the band came and played on a Tuesday night in Matosinhos. The dream never stopped for him since.

He learned to start the “flow.” To make things happen, he contacts musicians, venues, potential sponsors, embassies, cultural institutions, cities etc. Even if things don’t go through the first time, trying is always important. He plans things in a way that touring foreign and remote countries can become possible. Sometimes there are dreams that people don’t even realize they can come true. That’s one of the reasons why he is very excited about also helping out the bands he met in Asia to tour Europe. It is not common for the bands from these areas to tour in Europe yet, not with the level of popularity we are talking about, which in this case is close to zero. Even though it’s not about money, there is some money needed in the end, some guarantees, but it is entirely possible and exciting.

I asked him about the time we are living now. “People are living in many totalitarian regimes. Some of them undercover. You can find extreme parties everywhere that have radical policies about immigration. This is not different from what was happening back in 70s or 80s. If you look into the past, there is always drama. But the thing is that it’s not really getting worse. Of course we should not stay home, we should go out and do things, and shout it out loud, but it is also good to try not to freak out. We have just witnessed the worst case of who can be in power in the United States. People love it, more people hate it. Love and hate. But then you find how even in the US sustainable energy is good. Good for the environment, but above all, good for the economy. And that is why nobody will be able to shut it down. There is no way of slowing down electric cars or solar panels. I believe that focusing on good things is important. There are so many advances in science, including space exploration and discoveries. The real problem is that we are still programmed to focus on the bad news. Our ancestors were not focusing on the beauty of the forest, they were focusing in survival, paying attention on the dangers of the forest. And our genetic heritage is a big part of our behaviour, and takes a long time to change,” he said.

I am very looking forward to meeting them, their poetry and their lives in Japan in 2017. The trip continues.
